Sustainability

Our mission at Lighting Up the Sky is to share our knowledge, talents and compassion with communities
in need.

We aim to bring new technologies and new ways of thinking to those we touch. We're not just talking computers here. We're talking bridging social networking with actual social interaction, exploring new ways of growing and cooking your own food in urban areas, and learning to build solar-powered devices within your neighborhood. Our outreach efforts will strive to achieve balance with the environment and focus on healthy hearts, minds and souls. This involves not only sustainability, but also THRIVE-ability.

Lighting Up the Sky encourages all of our collaborators and supporters to consider living a life that not only sustains itself, but thrives in the process. To sustain is to be in balance; our environment requires it. To thrive is to be in abundance; we live fuller, richer lives when we are connected to communities that bring us joy.

Sustainability is just the first step toward what we think is possible for both the communities and environments we live in. At Lighting Up the Sky, we incorporate additional components into our workshops and community outreach. By focusing on THRIVE-ability, we infuse each project with laughter, music
and LIGHT.

Daily Ways for All Ages to Be Sustainable:

•  Conserve Water: Turn the water off while you are brushing your teeth. You can save up to 8 gallons a day in your home.

•    Conserve Energy: Turn off lights and unplug devices you are not using. Many of the electronic devices in your home are quietly drawing electricity all the time, whether you are using them or not.

•  Replenish the Soil: Compost your vegetable waste and, when ready, use it to grow edible plants in your home.

Daily Ways for All Ages to Be THRIVE-able:

•  Share Water: Look into local programs for rain catchment cisterns and work with your neighbors to set up a "water bank".   Kids can even setup their own small cisterns to learn how much water we could be collecting from the rain.

•  Create Energy: Learn how to install or create your own wind and solar devices. These could generate enough energy to run all of your lights.

•  Grow a Community Garden: Collaborate with your neighborhood or local school to create a bountiful garden.   Use the garden as a way to provide food for those in need, as well as a tool to teach others how to get started with their own gardening efforts.
